So hungry you could eat your spoon, too?

Wednesday May 13, 2009 , 1 min Read

Today, Startup Dunia featured a neat new ecofriendly social enterprise – BK Environmental Innovations. Based in Hyderabad, they have created “bakeys,” which is edible cutlery. In addition to producing a good that is environmentally friendly (they claim the spoon can degrade in a day, if you don’t choose to eat it), the company also has a policy to hire underprivileged individuals, with women making up 70% of their staff.  For aesthetic appeal, they add pulp from different vegetables to create an array of colors:

I can’t vouch for the taste, but it sounds like a great idea. It would work well especially for big events, where plastic utensils are consumed in bulk and thrown away after a brief use. If any TC-I readers want to try these out and report back, I’d love to hear how the utensils hold up after actually being used.
