Nimish V Adani, Founder, Workosaur.com

Thursday June 11, 2009 , 6 min Read

Nimish Adani had a dream that he kept shelving every now and then. Then realization dawned on him - we have but one life to live, and today is as good a day as any to begin. He channeled his energies, seized the day and emerged as the founder of Workosaur. Nimish says “I have wasted too much time wondering how things would shape up and what I could achieve individually. I delayed the thought of starting Workosaur.com because I had no background in technology and neither did I have the money to employ a development team. I would use such reasons to stay away from starting up though the itch would persist. Then last April, I had a near-death experience after which I chose to take a month’s leave from work. I felt then that I had just been escaping the obvious all the while. What I needed to know in technology, I could always Google and learn; and if I could not learn, I always had friends to fall back upon. Moreover, I started believing that the dots do somehow connect.”

After a brush with oblivion, there was no stopping Nimish or Workosaur. He explains what Workosaur is all about saying “Workosaur is an online job board for senior positions - C-level, vice president, director and manager positions. We focus on aggregating the most lucrative jobs in India and overseas - i.e. jobs that pay more than Rs. 10+ lac per annum.

The audience for Workosaur.com includes those who are eligible for jobs that pay more than Rs. 10 L per annum. So you could say our target audience is anyone who is currently earning a package in excess of Rs. 7.5 L per annum. And by our estimates, there are more than 1.5 million professionals in India who fall in this bracket and who could benefit from Workosaur.com. Naturally, our services will also help employers looking to recruit senior talent. Small and Medium-sized organizations that find it difficult to recruit talent will find our site particularly useful.”

Workosaur not only caters to higher management, but has many factors that make it different from most job portals. Nimish explains “First, in case of Workosaur, I do not provide access to the resume database and so it is a more secure system for senior professionals seeking jobs.”

“Second, I actively source jobs from the alumni communities and yahoogroups of top b-schools and engineering schools. Recruiters who use these groups prefer not to post their openings on the popular jobsites.”

“Third, if you log on to workosaur.com you would see the simplicity in the user interface – right from the search and browse feature to the forms. Users (both employers and jobseekers) don’t have to fill in more than 3-4 fields anywhere.”

“The usage of Workosaur is currently free for employers and jobseekers. The commercial model shall be rolled out soon but shall ancillary to the core job posting and application functionalities. I intend to keep the core functionalities free.”

He also plans to grow his business model in reach and scope; he says “As an online job board, the business needs to scale up in terms of the number of employers and number of job-seekers who actively use the site. Employers are either HR representatives of a company or recruiters at executive search firms while Job-seekers comprise of senior professionals. So each day, I focus on inventing more reasons for both these audiences to visit the site. I call these hooks. Once a few users notice a new hook, they each go and tell a few more about it and the business grows in an organic manner. That’s how I intend to continue scaling up the business.”

“And yes, I shall also be introducing a few commercial elements while keeping the core job posting and job application features free.”

Nimish claims that unfulfilled ideas keep haunting him, and entrepreneurship allows him to exorcise his poltergeist. This is also how he explains his leanings towards entrepreneurship.

He says “My biggest challenge has been task management. Currently, Workosaur has no employees apart from me and even the smallest of design or code change has to be personally handled (though I must acknowledge contributions by friends). Naturally, it can be difficult to keep track of the tasks at hand. To overcome this challenge, I tried using different time-management and GTD apps but I never graduated to persisting with any of them. So, I’ve finally fallen back upon paper and pen and it has been most effective. I find it ironic given the fact that I am running an Internet business.”

Once he had made his mind up to launch Workosaur, he wasted no time. He recalls his bid for seed capital and his initial setup saying “I didn’t have to look anywhere apart from my pocket. I just needed $10 to buy the domain name and another $25 for a month’s hosting service. Design, development, testing and deployment were all taken care of by me with the help from a few friends.”

“In terms of visitors, Workosaur is seeing double and triple digit growth month on month. The response has been quite humbling though the true test lies ahead (in monetization). In terms of employee count, I choose to run Workosaur as a 1-employee business. But yes, I do have an outsourced telemarketing team.”

Nimish reveals his thoughts on what he considers to be a vindication of his beliefs, he says “The biggest achievement for Workosaur is that in 6 months it has succeeded in carving a niche for itself in a space where you have a Naukri and a Monster – both of which have billion dollar market caps.”

“The greatest recognition and motivation has come in the form of users voluntarily expressing their satisfaction and delight about their experience on Workosaur.com. Also, the fact that we are consistently registering 50+% growth (number of visitors) month-on-months without a single rupee being spent on advertising is very encouraging.”

Entrepreneurship satisfies his need for mental stimulation and gives him the kind of peace only experienced by those who have put in a hard days work. He remarks on the distant future saying “While I am confident that Workosaur would turn in to a profitable entity in 2010, what is more important is to be able to create a platform that makes it easier to match the right senior talent with the right companies.”

Nimish also has a few words of guidance for those who are unsure about the right time to launch their business; he says “Think about starting up only if you have an idea. Better still, try and validate the idea. Then pursue it.”

Yourstory is sure that Workosaur and Nimish will keep ahead in the game and solve many a companies management worries. After all its now or never…
