Over the years, there has been a surge in the number of websites on the internet. The famous domains such as .com, .net, .org and other country based TLDs (Top Level Domains) will soon be a thing of the past as new domains will be introduced on the internet. The Board of ICANN(Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers),a governing body for authorizing top level domains on the internet ,has approved the expansion of generic TLDs.This will give a lot of freedom to companies and organizations to create distinct top level domains in sync with their company names ,for example:- .Yamaha, .BOSE,etc. or based on their business like .bikes,etc.

Unfortunatley, the change would not be so easy. The application fee alone will cost $185,000.The annual fee is $25, 000. But, there would be top-notch companies soon vying for such trendy domains. If there is a company dealing with tablets, owning a “.tablet” domain itself catches the eyes of many. This can be so effective in drawing attention of people interested in your product.

Rod Beckstrom, President and Chief Executive Officer of  ICANN says,“This decision has opened up all doors of imagination for the people looking to have a website on the internet. You might well end up surprised after viewing domain names in the near future and the result of this decision is surely unpredictable”. One thing is for sure. There would be a row between companies over the new TLDS.

ICANN will be accepting applications for new generic TLDs from 12th January 2012 to 12th April 2012. It means that one can expect see a new series of domains within an year from now.
