Mekin Maheshwari, President, Engineering, Flipkart.com, was one of the panellists during the Grand Finale of TechSparks, YourStory.in’s flagship event. Chief evangelist Venkatesh Krishnamoorthy caught up with Mekin on a rapid fire round as to what made Flipkart successful and created a buzz around Internet businesses in India.YourStory: After having successfully sold books online, what gave you confidence to launch mobiles and health care products online?
Mekin Maheshwari: Having experimented and tried. The two categories after books, that is media and mobiles, we didn’t know how much they will work. The way they worked blew us away. We were very happy with doing books but the number of mobile phones we sold at launch and the growth we have seen tells us that there are enough people waiting to buy. That confidence has been reinforced with every category launch we have done. We launched printers on 18th August and have seen enough uptake.
YS: Challenges on selling and buying online. There is a perception that mobile phones are not safe to buy online.
Mekin: The numbers we sell online are fairly large. I am not sure where you get the perception that you cannot buy mobile online. The warranties are the same as you would buy in an e-zone. We take of damages in transit through insurance and have a 30-day return policy, no questions asked. If you get a defective product, you will get it replaced.
