Duolingo : Learn languages while translating the web
Thursday December 08, 2011 , 1 min Read
There is no better way to learn a language than to actually use it often. Duolingo helps people learn languages for free while simultaneously helping translate the web!Duolingo provides you with sentences from a website in the language you want to learn. Initially you start with simple words whose translations are easily available online. Duolingo lets you see possible translations for words you may not know. You can then understand and memorize words you have learnt using educational examples. You can discuss and vote on the translations by other users, thereby learning from the community the right usage and vocabulary. This process creates translations while you work, creating a revenue stream for Duolingo. This will make sure the platform is free to use without ads and subscription charges. According to Duolingo if 1 million native English speakers used this service to learn Spanish, the entire English wikipedia could be translated to Spanish in 80 hours!
Duolingo is in private beta and you can request an invite here.
