It is said that – “Your fate depends on what you have or have not done, but also on whom you do or do not know.” In the times when a Facebook friend may refer you for a job or a casual greeting in some cultural festival leads into a partnership, it is quite apparent that your fate certainly depends more on whom you know! While one is in college, there are enough of opportunities which can be exploited. There are lots of events and activities which can provide a platform for networking to develop acquaintances. For example, by being a member in technical committees like IEEE, ISTE one can interact with technocrats, know their insight, understand the basics of professionalism. Oratory activities like Debate, Elocution gives students the kind of confidence which is anticipated by the companies in their potential employees.

One of the students who recently got placed at Tata Consultancy Services says, “Apart from academics, my participation in extra-curricular events helped me a lot while facing the interview.” Such activities even provide an upper-hand to students in striking a good conversation and making contacts.

Some of the successful companies like Infosys, Apple have branched out from college-time acquaintances which were made during events or over a cup of coffee. Moreover, extra-curricular activities, teaches the nitty-gritty of effective time management and optimum utilization of resources. If individuals gain such skills at a young age then it really becomes easy for them to pave their road in a professional environment. Mr. Sunil Handa (alumni of IIM-A) who started Eklavya Education Foundation was very active while he was doing his Engineering. His participation in literary activities added a shade of difference.

Also, networking developed during such events can help one in establishing life-long friendships. In a competitive world, where everyone is on their toes to deliver their best, knowing the talents of others is equally important as knowing the talents of oneself. Having said that, it is simple to gather that entrepreneurship is an amalgamated effort and therefore, if one wants to walk on that road then having a livewire network shall help one in embracing success.
