eCommerce in India has evoked a lot of reactions and many have questioned the profitability aspect. Mahesh Murthy, one of the most flamboyant figures in the Indian investor community went on record taking a few shots at the way this business is being built. In a recent development, SportsKeeda, an online content site that writes about sports has branched out with an eCommerce store.

SportsKeeda, a venture capital backed company, has more than 1500 writers generating content and has a commendable following amongst the sports loving junta of India. Founded by Porush Jain, SportsKeeda has been able to push huge amount of content online and has banked on it till now to generate revenues.

Via this recent development, SportsKeeda has tried to open up a new revenue stream. eCommerce has got a battering and many ventures providing sports goods exist but SportsKeeda has one clear advantage: Customer acquisition. With a captive user base of thousands of ardent followers (proof of which can be found out by the engagement on site), SportsKeeda has in most likelihood, got this right.

It remains to be seen how they handle logistics and retain customers but they certainly don’t need to look out for eyeballs. One thing that might go against them is the kind of readership SportsKeeda has; a major chunk is the school going kid who still doesn’t have the authority to buy online. Depending on how these things work out, SportsKeeda Store is surely something to watch out for.
