Flipkart, India's prominent online store, isn't known for selling apparels yet. The likes of Myntra, Jabong and Zovi seem to be doing a better job in this particular space. Entering the area, Flipkart launched Men's clothing in October last year about which we did a breakdown along with IntelligenceNode.
Today, Flipkart has forayed into women's clothing as well and have 55 brands such as French Connection, United Colors of Benetton, Jealous21, Lee, Wrangler and Allen Solly. There are a few ethnic wear brands such as Biba, W, Global Desi, and Mother Earth as well. Ankit Nagori, the VP of Business Development at Flipkart informed that the online apparel market in India is worth INR 100 crores a month.
Women clothing from Flipkart is an effort to capture an upcoming market that traditionally Flipkart isn't known for. Saran Chatterjee, the VP of Products at Flipkart spoke about this at eSparks that a majority of users on Flipkart are males (roughly 80-20). This move will be an effort to increase the women segment for which an uplifted UI will bear well.
