When jawans of the Indian army planted over 1 lakh saplings in less than 20 minutes
June 5th is celebrated as the World Environment Day across the world. The Indian Army has pledged to not only protect the nation’s borders, but also the environment. In 2015, it was a moment of national pride when the 130 Ecological Task Force of Territorial Army created a record by planting more than one lakh saplings in just 19 minutes!
On this day more than one lakh saplings were planted around the Almora and Pithoragarh districts of the Kumaon region, Uttarakhand, by the battalion in dedication to protect the ecology through afforestation, reported India Times.
A day before the project, Col Nandu Kumar BN, the Commanding Officer of the battalion had said, “Such a noble cause can only be accomplished if it is supported by one and all in the society. We intend to involve the social fabric of Pithoragarh so that they develop their concern towards nature and the ecological system. However, it has been realized that it is even more important to conceptualise the theme of environment protection in the minds of young children and encourage them to associate themselves towards making the earth green by balancing its ecological system. This battalion has taken measures to engage children in mass plantation in the past on several occasions.”
The area was approximately about 100 hectares and included the mountainous forest land. About 15 different varieties of plants were selected for the plantation. The battalion had already planted more than 1.6 crore plants over an area of 15000 acres of forest land to set a new record. The ambitious project ensured them a place in the Limca Book of Records.
According to Zee News, on the occasion of World Environment Day, the Navy, in 2015, set itself a goal of reducing paper consumption at all its establishments by 10 per cent. According to a statement by Navy, a naval establishment had achieved a 30 per cent reduction in the use of paper by leveraging technology for automation in office work.
We at Think Change India congratulate the Indian Army for the rare feat, and insist that our readers take more of similar initiatives. Lest we forget what we are collectively capable of.
