In this age of technology, there is an app for every little interaction a person wishes to have or a task that needs to be done. Mobile apps are the new way to stay connected with the world. But, however do we make complete use of them?

I think the answer lies in the fact that we download apps based on our requirements. Facebook, Snapchat, WhatsApp and Instagram are all for us to be in constant touch with family and friends. Google Maps is used to help us find our way in any city. These apps can be found on almost all mobiles, but what about apps that help you perform your tasks with a little more ease? Here are five categories of mobile phone apps that we think every woman must have to make her life a little more manageable and stress-free.

5-apps

Safety apps

We asked a bunch of teenagers in Mumbai whether they had any safety apps on their phones, and surprisingly, the answer was a big no. Of course, the interesting thing to note was that almost all of them were aware that there were some kind of safety apps. On digging deeper, one sensed that maybe they didn’t consider it that important or maybe they considered a city like Mumbai to be a safe place.

Safety, however, is important wherever you may live. Many apps such as WatchOverMe, bSafe, ReactMobile and StaySafe are available on Android and iOS. These are currently the best women-safety apps. Each app is unique and provides features such as an algorithm to alert the user, and her family and friends, if the driver in the cab she is travelling in deviates from the intended route. Emergency phone calls can be made to alert users’ guardians, of their GPS location.

Menstrual calendar apps

Between running to work, gym, happy hours, and more, your period is probably the last thing on your mind. However, there are many apps that provide the facility of keeping track of your monthly cycle, like Fertility Friend Mobile, Clue and Period Tracker. These apps not only calculate and track current and future period dates, but also tell you about your ovulation cycle and fertility, your moods and your symptoms, all in a simple month-view calendar. Apps like MyPill serve as a reminder telling you when you should pop a pill in order to avoid pregnancy.

Healthcare apps

It is not necessary that you need to be fitness crazy to download a health app. Even if you want to keep a check on your food intake and calculate the calories that you are consuming, you can download any of the health apps. A healthier lifestyle has never hurt anyone, and apps like MyFitnesPal, RunKeeper, Pact, Fitbit etc., will help people achieve their fitness goals, whether it is to work out, maintain one’s weight or to count daily intake of calories. Some apps, like Fitbit, also go one step further and provide you with a tracker for your heart performance.

Shopping apps

Almost all women love to shop, and some of the favourite brands can be shopped online through apps like Amazon, Flipkart or Snapdeal. And if you are someone who likes to stock up clothes and accessories before buying, Jabong or Myntra apps would be better for you.

However, if you generally feel guilty after splurging on clothes, DesiDime helps users to shop daily as well as save big bucks. It has listings of clothes, fashion accessories, gadgets, movie tickets, restaurant orders, flight or cab bookings, groceries, and offers lined up for its users. Additionally, this app also has forums with thousands of members experienced in online shopping, who post and discuss deals, give store and product reviews, and shopping advice, thus helping you make a well-informed purchase.

To-do list apps

Juggling dozens of daily tasks isn’t easy. A wall calendar and a pen-and-paper to-do list can help, but a smarter way to plan your workday is by downloading some of these apps. Todolist, Any.Do, Carrot, Wunderlist etc., have a good range of functionalities and also have options for collaborations. Evernote is another app where you can save snippets of web articles you find useful, or note things by clicking their photos, organise receipts, bills etc. You can also chat with your colleagues and friends to discuss any important ideas, or easily find anything you want from your notes with these apps.
