World no tobacco day: 200 residents of Gurugram to organise a candle-lit march

World no tobacco day: 200 residents of Gurugram to organise a candle-lit march

Wednesday May 31, 2017 , 2 min Read

Though consumption of tobacco in the form of cigarette smoking has been completely banned in public spaces in Delhi and Gurugram and also various parts of the country, it is no surprise that we often find people chewing tobacco and smoking cigarettes. In light of this, to raise awareness of the harmful hazards of tobacco consumption, 200 residents of Gurugram have voluntarily taken up an initiative to do a candle-lit walk in the locality to mark the importance of 'World No Tobacco Day'. This idea also aims to ban the sale of tobacco products once every week.

The 200 residents will take up this walk between Paras Hospitals Gurugram and Ardee City. Extending to a stretch of 2 km, several people from the health sector, resident welfare associations, non-profit organisations, and district authorities are going to participate in this walk for one hour. The march starts at 7:30 pm and ends at 8:30 pm.

Anupam Mishra, a resident of Sushant Lok of Gurugram, in a chat with Times Of India said,

When the government can impose odd-even for 15 days to control the pollution, then tobacco prohibition too can be imposed on the community for the health benefits of the people. We can have at least one No Tobacco Day in our city. Prohibiting sales on a Monday will help those who do not smoke at home and therefore, will not be able to get any advance supply on the weekend.

Apart from this noble attempt to amplify useful awareness, the participants which include doctors and health experts are going to sign a petition to bring pressure on the government to prohibit the sale and usage of tobacco products for a day all across Gurugram, especially on Monday, the most stressful day of the week.
