In an attempt to revive livestock economy, Telangana government has launched a massive scheme of distributing 15 million sheep. These sheep will be distributed in a period of two years along with subsidy to 30 lakh people from the Golla and Kuruma families.

The scheme was launched at Kondapala by Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao in his Gajwel assembly constituency, by handing over sheep to more than 800 beneficiaries. The plan is to distribute a ram and 20 sheep to each beneficiary and this will approximately cost Rs 10,000 crore to the government. The Chief Minister had dressed as a shepherd with a turban and gongadi. According to India Today, he said,

It is shameful that despite the presence of a population of 30 lakh Golla and Kuruma people, Telangana sources about 650 lorries of sheep from different parts of the country including Rajasthan. We are now confident about creating an economy of Rs 25,000 crore in the state within three years. But, we want them to follow the government's guidelines and take care of their sheep distributed today.

According to IANS, KSR also inaugurated a toll-free number 1962 for the shepherds and a mobile veterinary clinic. He urged the landowners among the sheep rearing communities to take up farming with the help of government’s support to the sector.

46 lakh acres of land is being planted with grass to make sure that there is enough fodder for sheep. And the sheep are procured from other states to go through with the scheme. As the Chief Minister sees it, this is one way of definitely transforming Telangana into a meat-exporting state.
