This automated CPR keeps performing compression even when on move

This automated CPR keeps performing compression even when on move

Friday August 25, 2017 , 2 min Read

A provider can face several challenges while performing a high-quality Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on patients, especially in the ambulance while moving the patient to the hospital. To combat these challenges, attempts to make an automated CPR by researchers and device manufacturers began in the 1990s. An automated CPR called the AutoPulse Resuscitation System was designed by the ZOLL to do just that.

A load-distributing band compressor, AutoPulse, is mechanically actuated and battery driven. According to Resuscitation Central, both direct compression and semi-circumferential thoracic compression can be performed by this device. The patient can be automatically sized by this device and it can be used at a 45-degree angle.

AutoPulse can be used to perform CPR while on the move and has been designed to support the manual process instead of replacing it. This battery-operated and portable device can be used to perform compression on the patient non-stop thus giving medics more time to transport patients safely. According to the Business Insider, the intention of this device is to reduce the rescuer fatigue’s impact, and the total cost of this kit along with the batteries is nearly Rs 7 lakh (£9,000).

According to the Futurism, this device can automatically calculate the shape, size and resistance of every patient’s chest which helps in delivering unique compression to each patient. This device is especially helpful for patients in remote locations because of the automated non-stop compression.

As per Resuscitation Central, studies suggested that there was a 235 percent improvement in survival to discharge, 88% improvement in survival to hospital admission. Almost each study conducted proved the effectiveness of AutoPulse in long-term survival rates.

At a time when number of deaths due to sudden heart attacks is almost equivalent to that of deaths from cancer, suicide, HIV, and many others, AutoPulse comes as a boon.
