'Let’s talk Inclusion’- Can tech and workplaces empower the specially-abled?

'Let’s talk Inclusion’- Can tech and workplaces empower the specially-abled?

Thursday December 07, 2017 , 2 min Read

Over a billion people – making up nearly 15 percent of the world’s population – are disabled. The focus on bringing the disabled population into the mainstream is an important developmental indicator of any country, but India has been late in joining the global movement to make the world – both physical and digital – more inclusive.

In December, as we engage in year-end celebrations, SocialStory invites you to discuss #Inclusion. In line with our previous attempts of chronicling journeys of the specially-abled, and building dialogue around inclusion and accessibility, we engaged in a month-long campaign on making #IndiaInclusive.

From battling social stigma to a general lack of awareness and sensitivity among people, every day is a challenge for a person with a disability in India.

To take the discussion ahead, we are organising a panel discussion, with corporate leaders, activists, and other stakeholders. The campaign discussed stories of changemakers, and the various issues around accessibility. It also encouraged thought leaders and change-makers to share their views and opinions on the subject. Two themes emerged, which require not just discussion, but also action from stakeholders.

Panel Discussion 1: Technology to empower the specially-abled

What has today’s tech in store for the specially-abled? Join the panel headed by Tarun Sarwal,Head of Innovation, International Committee of the Red Cross, Head of Enable Vision Moses Chowdhari; celebrated evangelist of inclusion Ashwin Karthik; and Program Director for Assistive Technologies, Mindtree Foundation, Manickavelu M.

Panel Discussion 2: Employment and Workplace inclusion

How equipped are today’s workplaces to accommodate and employ the specially-abled? In conversation with Pranesh Nagri from Enable India; Mandhumita Venkatarman, diversity and inclusion head- Hindustan coca cola beverages; and Meenu Bhambhani, Vice President & Head - Corporate Social Responsibility at Mphasis.

We look forward to your participation in the discussion, on December 8 at YourStory office, from 3 pm to 5 pm.
