Assam girl Bahni Telenga clears UPSC, sets an example for tea garden worker community

The UPSC examination results, announced Friday, gave the state of Assam a strong reason to rejoice. Securing the 661st rank, Bahni Kumari Telenga became the first woman from the tea garden workers community, to clear the civil services exam.

The daughter of former Assam Labour Minister Barki Prasad Telenga, Bahni is a B-tech graduate in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from the National Institute of Technology at Durgapur. Having completed her schooling from St Mary’s Higher Secondary School, and Cotton College in Guwahati, she is one of the 25 candidates to have cracked the UPSC from the North East this year.

Bahni resigned from her job at Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited in Visakhapatnam to prepare for the exam.

"I could not succeed in my two earlier attempts. I left the job and started preparing for the exam at home all by myself. Right now I am prepared to shoulder any civil service job, but I will not give up trying for IAS,” an elated Bahni told The Assam Tribune.

She did not undergo any coaching, says proud father Barki Prasad Telenga told The North East Today.

Other students from the region who have cleared the UPSC exam this year are Bipasha Kalita, Swapneel Paul, Mrigakhi Deka, Aranyak Saikia, Purna Borah, Manalika Borgohain, Siddhant Das, Sanket Agarwal, Mamoni Doley, Subhajit Bhuyan, Bahni Telenga, Partha Protim Das, Manoj Swargiary, Bidisha Chintey, Deepjoy Das, and Yashodhara Das.

Bipasha Kalita scored the highest rank at 41, and was followed by Swapneel Paul and Mrigakhi Deka.
