From Silicon Valley to Thiruvananthapuram, Hari Gopinathan's journey to help create employment in the Kerala city

When software was still a buzz word, Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala, opened doors for the setting up of Oracle facility in 2014. The credit to this development goes to city boy Hari Gopinathan, who relocated from the Silicon Valley

Working as a senior manager at Oracle in the US, Gopinathan moved to Thiruvananthapuram three years after he joined the company. Placed as a troubleshooter for Oracle Business Intelligence Applications, he set up a Technopark office in Thiruvananthapuram, making way for employment and other overall development to a city that holds over 9.5 lakh people.

He, along with his wife, Rekha, who is a vice president at Suntec, a financial services and digital & communications services firm, moved to the city with their two daughters, Aparna and Archana. In an interview with Technopark Today, he said,

Silicon Valley was kind of getting mind-numbing for both of us, since we both graduated in India and our initial circle of friends in San Francisco were almost always from the IT field.

The couple considered moving back to India after being tired of the monotonous life of running an IT household. Hari and Rekha also took this as an opportunity to introduce their kids to the Indian traditions and livelihood.

Our country is well on its way to become a world power. There is also a need, we felt, to be with our parents during their golden years, so that we can mutually support each other as well as provide some quality time for our children and let them be with their grandparents, and vice-versa, he added.

Gopinathan believes that his city has immense potential for growth and the onus now is on its citizens. Home to the world's richest temple, the Sree Padmanabha Swami Temple, Thiruvananthapuram has the potential to evolve into a technology hub with its buffet of talent, tradition and values, he adds. As of now, Gopinathan has served for over 10 years at Oracle according to his LinkedIn bio.
