Kerala set to open a shopping mall spread over 36,000 sq ft for women, by women
Mahilla, a mall targeting women, will be inaugurated in Kozhikode this Onam and will give a huge boost to women entrepreneurs.
This August, Kozhikode in Kerala will get an exclusive mall that is run by women for women. Located in front of Fathima Hospital on Wayanad Road, the mall is a joint project by Kozhikode Corporation Kudumbashree and the District Kudumbashree Mission. The 36,000 sq ft mall will be called Mahilla, which means women, and will be inaugurated during Onam.
In a conversation with The News Minute, Ramsy Ismail, Kudumbashree Project Officer, said,
It is meant to coincide with the 20th year celebrations of Kudumbashree. The project will give jobs directly and indirectly to at least 300 women. Preference would be given to Kudumbashree workers but there is also space for women’s societies and private ventures.
All job roles, including the mall management and administration, will be performed by women. “The shops would also cater to women’s requirements,” Ramsy says. There will be a health club, a food court, spas, cosmetic jewellery shops, an entrepreneurship training centre, a women’s cooperative bank and so on. The idea is an extension of the Kudumbashree bazaars that we wish to start everywhere, Ramsy added.
The mall will also act as a permanent outlet for products from the Kudumbasree Bazaar and will act as a gateway for woman entrepreneurs and women communities, according to the Hindu. The five-storeyed mall will host a supermarket, children's park, beauty parlour, women’s bank, fancy stores, textiles and ready-made stores boutiques, footwear shops, dry cleaning outlets, car washes, and optical shops. Handicrafts, baby care, home appliances and a book stall will also be present in the all, apart from conference rooms, training centres, and underground car parking facility.
