From the wink that launched a thousand controversies to the PC-Jonas wedding shenanigans, women broke the internet, for different reasons.
While you and I may have differing views about how the year whizzed past by, for some people, 2018 was absolutely phenomenal. Whether it was in terms of professional achievement or key milestones in their personal lives (hello, Mrs Pee Cee Jonas!), these women were in the public eye for a good part of the year. And needless to say, as a result they were all over the internet, on our newsfeeds, and even in every social media update.
They spurred news, and we, loyal readers and followers, happily obliged – looking them up on the internet again and again, following their every move, and staying up-to-date with their life and work. Scroll down to meet our five boss ladies, who were the most searched personalities on Google India this year.
Priya Prakash Varrier
Does the name ring a bell? It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Malayalam actor Priya Prakash Varrier took the top spot in the list, even above the whole Bollywood fraternity. After all, she had become an overnight internet sensation earlier this year, when the music video from her film Oru Adaar Love made its debut. Featuring Priya in the front and centre of all action, the song sequence instantly grabbed eyeballs – mostly due to her expressive depictions and a now-memorable wink – and generated a thousand memes and posts. While the video came out way back in February, Priya continues to dominate the search list of Google India. Nothing less than remarkable, right?
Decked in her OTT salwar-kammez and proudly flaunting her desi style, Sapna Choudhary is hardly like any of the other personalities featured on this list. Yet, the fact that she holds #3 position on Google Search is reason enough to take note of this feisty dancer-cum-performer. Interestingly enough, Sapna is not really new to showbiz. She has been around for sometime now and most recently made a short appearance on the popular reality TV series, Bigg Boss, rising swiftly on the public curiosity charts again. Along with all the media attention and social media hype in her favour, her career received another boost this year as she starred in a foot-tapping dance number in the film, Veerey Ki Wedding.
She needs no introduction! Actor, singer, investor and business owner, Priyanka Chopra has truly redefined the meaning of ‘global icon’ this year. Having successfully made a Hollywood crossover a couple of years ago, this year saw Priyanka take on newer roles – both on screen and behind it – support a multitude of social causes, and continue to trend on most of our searches, as always. And this is just the tip of the iceberg. Never too vocal about her personal life in the media, the actor has been all over the headlines in the past few weeks, thanks to her nothing-less-than-a fairy tale wedding to American singer Nick Jonas.
Fun fact, Google India has been quite curious about Nick as well – he is No. 2 on the Google search list.
Sara Ali Khan
Quick-witted like her star father, Saif Ali Khan, and grounded like her actor mother, Amrita Singh, Bollywood debutante Sara Ali Khan is the new obsession and for good reason. Just earlier this month, the 25-year-old Columbia University graduate made her movie debut opposite Sushant Singh Rajput in Kedarnath. Since then, she has been a constant in almost every chat show. Even in times when star kids have to bear their own albatross with talk of nepotism, Sara has been nothing but the critics’ darling, garnering mostly rave reviews. As for her fans, clearly they don’t seem to get enough of her, as proven by the number of time people have looked her up on Google.
Last but not the least, the latest royal on the block, Meghan Markle is the fifth woman (and #8 overall) on Google India’s search list. Meghan, better known for playing paralegal Rachel Zane in the American TV series Suits, became a part of the British royal family in May after she tied the knot with Prince Harry in a widely anticipated ceremony. Celebrities including David Beckham, George Clooney, Oprah Winfrey, our very own Priyanka Chopra, and other members of the royal family were a part of the wedding, adding to the hype that clearly hasn’t died down, even months after the ceremony. And now that the Duchess of Sussex, as she's titled, is pregnant with the couple's first child, she could well remain on the list well into the new year.
