Small Films

Concept Based movies have a larger role at hand. The cinemas have the power of converting unique ideas into mainstreams. In Hollywood, movies explain their whole premise through movie titles. Snakes on a Plane, Hobo with a shotgun, even Jordan Peele’s “US “ need not explain their concept of titles to draw in audiences . However Bollywood inspires to promote small based films. The structure of these short films requires a concept that empowers and educates the society. If a movie begins with a great, original idea, chances are good it will be successful, even if executed marginally well.

Empowerment

Movies inspired by social issues connect with audience at large. A small town like Bareilly could be an exact replica of Karol Bagh, Delhi in spirit as shown in Hindi films. The evergreen favourite Kamal Kishore Ghosla character essayed by Anupam Kher might connect with several different Khoslas in various households. A typical rooafzah is the wine drink for several aunties and uncles of middle class Delhi. Also considering women based films like ‘Astitva’ and ‘Pink’ the representation to not demonize women as prizes of the righteous and macho men is trying to find an identity independent within the male dominated society.

Unique Ideas

A story like Hindi medium could be a modern update of a factual film like KKG. There the land Mafias played sharks who acquired the land illegally. Here the parent’s background stands the victims of children’s education where schools take advantage of their circumstance. The power of content makes a strong statement without being strident or shouting slogans. With rapidly changing consumer tastes, it’s your concept or idea that opens minds and hearts to your story. In the hands of Habib Faisal, Nagesh Kukonoor, Revathi, Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari some of the most introspective subjects like ‘Do Dooni Chaar’,’ Dor’, ‘Phir Milenge’, ‘Bareilly ki Barfi’ have found ways into the writers room. From the negative side of the corporate to the plight of men dealing with societal pressures; the industry is not only banking on the North Indian Stories but also regions that are stretching east or farther south. All these subjects suggest that comedies to sweet slice of life movies have the markings of a successful blockbuster.

Commercial and Critical Success

Content films feature inspiration through the eyes of top heroes to young debutants. There are stories which are finding their way into the theatres just on the support of its dialogues, story line and characters.  Sairat became one of the most loved films as well as a blockbuster box office hit. It was released on the same day as “Baaghi”, despite being released in lesser number of screens; the cinema began a love affair when released around 450 cinemas in Maharashtra. It went on to become a highest grosser after "The Jungle Book," Akshay Kumar's "Airlift" and Shah Rukh's "Fan."  Content films have been able to dominate 70-80% of the population as they mostly comprise of theatergoers.  Movies on geography, society and ethnicity would be the last of problems. The genre of concept based films, ranges from noir dramas to family based films. For moviegoers the kind of cinema they are exposed to ranges from ten to eleven different films within a month. An entertainment company ensures that each film has a larger emotional quotient at play than producing a film on a larger scale. People want to view films based on the subjects they deal with, and the manner in which they engage with those ideas will see success.

Sports Films the next big role

As viewers we are moving away from Cricket and Boxing based biopics. We are seeking unknown stories from other areas of sports. Today there are lesser popular sports that leaves an impact on the audience. Today the on field victories are the bigger on screen hits. Be it the tale of 1911 where Mohun Bagun’s wins over East Yorkshire FC or be a big star like Amitabh Bachchan plays a football coach to better lives of street kids. All these stories have an active role to play in the Indian Film Industry. Content driven films have a longer shelf life and have a repeat audience.
