ICAS knowledge management model in software development

“The most important, and indeed the truly unique, contribution of management in the 20th century was the fifty-fold increase in the productivity of the manual worker in manufacturing. The most important contribution management needs to make in the 21st century is similar to increase the productivity of Knowledge work and the knowledge worker” – Peter Drucker.

Boisot I space knowledge management model is based on the key concept of information and can be considered as a three dimensional cube with three different directions. After this, a new model is introduced called Complex Adaptive System model which is based on ICAS (Intelligent Complex Adaptive Systems) theory.

Complex adaptive system is a terms which is generally used to describe loosely organized academic field that has grown up around the analysis of such systems. For example, the global macroeconomic network within a country or group of countries are said to be a complex adaptive system.

According to ICAS theory, an enterprise is seen as an adaptive and complex system. A complex adaptive systems includes several types of independent agents that interact with one another locally and their combined behavior would result in rise to complex adaptive phenomena. All these models contain a series of functions and methods that makes sure that the viability of any living system in general and of organizations, in particular.

Intelligent complex adaptive systems are based on cybernetics principles, which uses communications and control mechanisms in order to predict, understand and describe what a viable enterprise should do. These kind of systems involve lots of independent agents which are interacting. Their behavior makes possible the appearance of some complex circumstances of adaptation. A general model of a complex behavior is the result of all interactions. In the adaptive model, the intelligent elements are made of people who are self-organized, but who can remain as a part of general hierarchies of the organizations.

In software development, the most important challenge is to use the advantage offered by the force of the people when they corporate and coordinate, keeping a global sense of unity. Organizations solve these issues by creating options, using resources, both internal and external, that would help us to add value over the initial input.

“I could not have crafted (our) Knowledge Management plan without the knowledge gained in class. I entered the class with ideas of what kinds of things needed to be done. I left knowing why those things were important and what benefits mighty be achieved “- Lisa Taylor, Booz Allen Hamilton.
