Child care resources: Safety measurements in classrooms

When a parent leaves their young toddler in the preschool each day, they trust that the preschool teachers and infrastructure will keep them safe, as they go about their daily preschool curriculum. However, from the teacher’s perspective this task isn’t easy, as it includes keeping an eye on a whole lot of energetic, unaware toddlers, and monitoring their every move without them knowing it.

To make this task a little easier for the teachers and staff members, a few measures can be taken in the design and arrangement of the classrooms and other areas where the children will be spending a majority of their time during their preschool curriculum.

First of all, the toys should each be inspected carefully for a choking hazard. Children tend to take everything to their mouths, and thus each toy used in the early childhood education should be non-poisonous and of a shape and size that children may not swallow it or injure themselves on it. The ones that are slightly hazardous but necessary should be kept away under lock and key and only taken out under supervision by the teacher.

Secondly, electric equipment, outlets etc. should be kept out of reach of children and covered. They are a major hazard in terms of electric shocks and fire. Child safe sockets are available in the market. One should also keep electrical cords away from the children and teach them the basics of electrical safety at the earliest nursery school age, such as not to touch the equipment with wet hands etc.

Thirdly, all potentially poisonous products such as cleaning supplies should be used before the arrival of the children and stashed away safely. As previously stated, nursery school age children tend to take everything they see to their mouths. These highly poisonous substances can do lasting harm to your child and even lead to death.

The surfaces should all be covered in soft covers as far as possible. Lastly, the best way to keep your children safe during their preschool curriculum is to educate them on the dos and don’ts of day to day safety.

Remember that instead of being afraid of the world around you and keeping your children forever clos to your heart, you can set them free, after taking certain measures to make sure that nothing untoward happens to them.
