Google summer of code is a flagship program from Google, aimed at helping students contribute to open source and inturn help faster development of open source products. It has been taking place since the past 12 years with the size of participation increasing every year. It takes place between May-June of every year when universities across the globe break for summer vacations.

What is Google Summer of Code?

Google summer of code is a flagship program from Google, aimed at helping students contribute to open source and inturn help faster development of open source products. It has been taking place since the past 12 years with the size of participation increasing every year. It takes place between May-June of every year when universities across the globe break for summer vacations.

What is the benefit for students ?

Students get exposure to some of the best open source developers across the globe who volunteer to mentor students on their projects. Students also get exposed to the best coding standards used by the industry along with it their knowledge on the programming language of their choice also has to be at it's peak to contribute to the community. As a monetary benefit students also are paid $5,500 USD based on their work commitment. Some students also are selected by companies who work on the software as full term employees post graduation. Some are selected to travel abroad free of cost to present their work to the community at the yearly conferences.

How to crack Google Summer of Code ?

The application for Google Summer of Code usually begins around the mid of March and goes on until the beginning of April. The time between January and the mid of march usually goes to do the following:

1. Gaining knowledge in the programming language of your choice.

2. Deciding on the community to contribute to.

3. Studying the source code of the open source software you wish to contribute to.

4. Spending time with the community understanding source code and also fixing bugs.

5. Reading other successful proposals.
