Amazon India’s new ‘Small Business Day’ to go online on December 16

Amazon India is launching its first ‘Small Business Day’ on December 16, 2018 - a day where micro entrepreneurs and small businesses can get their unique products discovered by customers. The specially curated online event will display these rare products under various programmes such as Kala Haat, Amazon Saheli, Amazon Select, and Amazon Launchpad. These items will be offered at special prices during the event, which starts at midnight on December 16.

In a release, Amazon said that this initiative aims to promote small businesses and micro entrepreneurs, and will witness participation from tens of thousands of small and micro businesses on Amazon.in. Amazon Small Business Day aims to provide an opportunity for customers to discover and purchase products made by small businesses and micro entrepreneurs and thus support local employment and the economy, the statement read.

“Most sellers on Amazon.in are small and micro businesses. Through Amazon Small Business Day, we want to provide customers an opportunity to find, discover and show their support by buying unique selection offered by small and micro businesses at special prices. We believe this initiative will bring small and micro sellers and customers together to boost India’s local economy,” said Gopal Pillai, Director and General Manager, Amazon India Seller Services. “As always, we have worked backwards from sellers’ needs to design, conceptualise and innovate on new initiatives to transform the way they sell and address the customer’s desire to shop for unique products.”

A cashback of 10 percent for customers has been introduced on all digital payments as a one-time offer for the inaugural day and to encourage customers to support and buy from these small and micro entrepreneurs. The company maintains that this initiative is in alignment with the Government of India's ‘Make In India’ and ‘Digital India’ vision.

The statement added that various reports show that India’s small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are growing their online presence and using digital technologies to enable their businesses. ‘The SMB sector has been thriving in the past three years due to the growth of e-commerce, consumer demand, rising income and advanced digital technologies. Amazon.in is committed to further accelerate the growth of the sector that is expected to rise by 55 per cent by the year 2020,’ the statement from Amazon India read.
