231 women from Coimbatore college donate their tresses for cancer patients
The students and staff of PSG College of Arts and Science in Coimbatore voluntarily donated their hair to make wigs for cancer patients.
To women, tresses are a symbol of beauty. They play a role in defining a woman’s personality. However, for cancer patients, besides the trauma about their health condition, they also have to undergo the stress of losing hair due to side effects of chemotherapy.
In order to express solidarity with such patients, PSG College of Arts and Science in Coimbatore organised an event called ‘Locks of Hope’, in which 231 women, including staff members and students, donated eight inches of their hair. The donated tresses will be used to make wigs for cancer patients.
The event was co-organised by Naturals Salon & Spa. This was the first time that such an event was held in Coimbatore. Similar events have been organised in Chennai in the past.
While the number of expected participants was 100, as many as 231 women came forward and voluntarily parted with their hair locks. The organisers offered to cut the donors’ hair in the style of their choice.
“Naturals gave these girls the haircut they desired, free of cost. The donated hair will be collected and sent to Raj Impex, Chennai, which is one of the country’s biggest wig makers. The wigs will then be given to 10 cancer patients across the country,” Latha Verghis of Page 3 Salon told The Covai Post.
The college had got in touch with the proprietor of Naturals Salon & Spa, CK Kumaravel, who is also an alumnus of the institute, to organise the event.
“When my college approached me, I was more than happy. We were doing small projects like this before, but we were excited to do the same for more than 100 students. In my opinion, the girls who were ready to sacrifice their amazing tresses are the most beautiful women out there,” Kumaravel told Edex Live.
