5 times when it’s OK to quit without giving notice
Quitting without serving the mandatory notice period was completely unheard of till a few years ago. However, today, more and more people are resigning from their jobs on-the-spot with the intention of never setting foot in their company again. It goes without saying that most of these individuals are millennials. While some feel overworked and under-appreciated, others are frustrated with limited prospects.
Quitting without notice has its downsides. But there are some arguments that can be made in favor of resigning without giving your boss a heads-up. Here are a few of these exceptional circumstances:
If a certain colleague, or your boss for that matter, is making unacceptable overtures towards you or passing lewd comments, you shouldn't spend another day at that job. This is applicable even more so if your company doesn't have a team in place that deals with issues of abuse and harassment. Just concentrate on getting out of the unsafe environment as soon as you can.
Are your managers involved in illegal activities? Do they expect you to be a part of their unethical practices? If yes, make sure you find a good opportunity someplace else, and run for your life. The last thing you want is to get embroiled in legal issues and take the fall for something you haven't done.
Firing of employees
If your company is firing its employees without any reason, don't worry about serving the notice period. You never know when it will be your turn. Unfortunately, this happens more often than you think. When a company isn't making profits anymore and can't afford to pay its employees, it often resorts to such extreme measures.
Nothing to do
If you have wrapped up all your duties, and have no one to train, it is alright not to spend two more weeks in a job that makes you miserable. If you know that you'll just be whiling away your time when you could be productive elsewhere, get up and leave without giving notice.
Unsafe work environment
Are you on edge all day when you're in office? If you feel like your workplace is unsafe, just get out. Spending eight hours every day at a place that makes you uneasy is not worth the money. Hunt for better opportunities and quit as soon as you land a job. If you already have a bad feeling about something, don't wait for something bad to happen to make you realize you were right all along.
Try to serve your notice period if you can, as a relieving letter will make it easier for you to secure your next job. However, if the above-mentioned reasons are at play at your current workplace, it may be okay, or even preferable, for you to leave without serving notice.
