Engineering student from SRM University develops protective gear to fight COVID-19
A second-year Mechanical Engineering student P Mohan Aditya invented a biodegradable face shield called ‘Face Shield 2.0’
While the coronavirus has pushed people into their houses, it has not restricted people to become innovative. The dire times have opened avenues that previously were not explored. From students to senior citizens, everyone has been helping out by making protective gear for healthcare professionals, and the public in general.
And, a student at SRM University, Amravati, Andhra Pradesh, has brought an interesting innovation to the country.
A highly useful face shield deemed ‘Face Shield 2.0’ developed by P Mohan Aditya, a Mechanical Engineering student, was unveiled in the Secretariat premises on Thursday in the presence of Education Minister Adimulapu Suresh, and MP (Member of Parliament) Nandigam Suresh.
The light, easy to wear, comfortable, and durable shield aims to protect the wearer against the deadly COVID-19 virus. One’s entire face will be protected from external hazards and other infectious virus or bacteria, thanks to this thin plastic film that works as an outer defence.

“Attesting the signs of a true researcher, P Mohan Aditya, a second-year Mechanical Engineering student, represents the future generation well by developing a highly useful face shield that costs less than a plate of snacks,” reported The Hans India.
The headband is made of three-ply corrugated cardboard, which is a fully degradable material, and the 175-micron plastic sheet can be reused, making the face shield biodegradable.
It was produced using the CNC (Computer Numerical Controlled) machine. Once designed, the shape of the plastic film was created using CAD (Computer-aided Design).
“I have given this CAD model as an input to the CNC machine. Now, the CNC machine software analysed the CAD model and started to cut the cardboard and transparent sheet according to the drawing provided as an input. Thus, I managed to bring down the production time for manufacturing and assembling the face shield in less than two minutes,” Aditya told EdexLive.
Dr P Sathyanarayanan, the President of SRM University, and Prof D Narayana Rao, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, celebrated this innovation along with the government officials in the state.
As of Friday, India has reported over 1.19 lakh positive COVID-19 cases, along with 3,599 deaths.
