Announcing EduStars 2013 – The premier ed-tech conference of the year
YourStory is thrilled to announce the culminating conference of EduStars – our campaign to recognize education startups - on December 6th, 2013 at GINSERV, Bangalore. Read on…
Indian education startups are definitely all set to change the country. With its 1.2 bn population, 50% of which is below the age of 24, India offers a wealth of opportunities for education startups. According to the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2012, 96.5% of all rural children between the ages of 6-14 were enrolled in school but there are huge question marks on the quality of education. In 2012 nationally, 53.2% of all children in Std. V could not read a Std. II level text and 46.5% could not solve simple two-digit subtraction problems. This throws up major opportunities in the K12 space.
Test preparation seems to be even more lucrative, with 14 lakh aspirants applying for the Joint Engineering Entrance (JEE) – main for 2013, against a total of 9,885 seats across the 17 IITs. Similarly, 7.5 lakh medical aspirants appeared for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) in 2013, against a total 31,000 medical seats across 271 medical colleges. And these numbers look like just a drop in the ocean when one looks at the potential for skills development, be it for semi-skilled/ vocational training or more focused training programs for corporate professionals.
With the advent and inclusion of technology in education, terms like experiential learning, virtual classrooms or skills based training are the talk of the day. The number of education startups in all the verticals – content creation, collation or delivery, skill development and training, experiential learning, social network for students/job seekers, hardware supporting educational needs, mobile apps etc – have been increasing tremendously in the last few years.
In our mission to Inspire, Innovate & Ignite the spirit of entrepreneurship, YourStory.com partnered with Intel and Accel Partners to launch the 2nd edition of its annual event – EduStars. The 3-month online campaign sought to identify, recognize and support some of the most interesting and impactful startups, which are going to be the next sparkling stars in the education industry. As in 2012, EduStars 2013 has received a tremendous response. With the last round of applications left to be screened, we are very close to finding the top emerging education startups of the year 2013.EduStars 2013 will culminate with an exciting finale conference.
