Tuesday December 26, 2017 , 2 min Read

Bengaluru City joined the ranks of Singapore, Melbourne, New York, and became the first city in the country to have a logo of its own. The Tourism Department of the Karnataka Government recently launched the logo at the Vidhana Soudha, the seat of the state legislature of Karnataka.

The Government of Karnataka put its trust in the creativity of the crowd, the output of which is a crowdsourced logo. Nammur, the design group that was shortlisted, is the face behind the logo. Vinod Kumar, a creative designer and representative of the group, in a conversation with The Quint said,

"It was an open contest after a brief had come in the papers. Uru is taken from Kannada and we have done the typography to match the Kannada font. The typography was created in-house from scratch. We wanted the ‘Be’ and ‘u’ to stand out. I think Bangalore has a very vibrant, vivid open culture which allows people to do whatever they want. It does not restrict your freedom. ‘Be’ and ‘u’ represents ‘be you’."

Priyank Kharge, Minister for Tourism, Information Technology, Bio-technology and Science and Technology, said he is aiming at establishing a firm brand for Bengaluru city on the global map with this logo. In an interview with News Nation, Kharge said,

"Bengaluru is a brand for investment but we wanted to make it a global brand in the field of world tourism, we wanted to come across as a truly global cosmopolitan city. The idea is to ensure that we portray Bengaluru's history and see Bengaluru as No 1 city."
