Ex-InMobi guys start up Oliveboard; use technology to personalise education

Monday September 30, 2013 , 2 min Read

InMobi is one of the technology success stories from India. Having worked in it for a good period of time, Abhishek Patil and Satish Kumar gained expertise in the field. Education is a huge opportunity in India and combining it with strong data analytics, the duo came up with a product to help personalise education for students. Test Preparation comes closest to making it an online play, and hence Oliveboard started out in this direction.

Oliveboard is an adaptive learning system with the objective to use technology and large data to personalize education. The product was launched in the middle of last year with CAT preparation courses and they were also one of the EduStars. Since then, the company has included a few more courses - CMAT and Bank Exams. Oliveboard doesn’t develop its own content but ties up with topnotch content providers for the content on which their algorithm runs to give an adaptive learning experience to students.

Starting out as a B2C product, coaching classes started approaching Oliveboard to use their solution and they eventually opened it up. This opened up a revenue stream for Oliveboard and helped to push on the B2C side. Another course which picked up well is the “Camus Placement course” which helps students prepare for interviews when companies come to colleges to recruit.

Oliveboard has 15,500 registered online users and receives 105,000 pageviews per month. They also have apps which have seen good traction and currently has about 16,000 users. “From a testing + improvement plan site only, we have moved onto to become a full-fledged online learning solution for students which supports all formats of student study,” says Abhishek, about the evolution of the product. Oliveboard has also recently come up with gamified social learning where students can come together on a platform and study. Completely bootstrapped till now, Oliveboard is also looking to raise a seed round to go out and market the product.
