AI skills now pay 38% more than traditional IT roles
A new report finds AI professionals earn up to 38% more than traditional IT workers, with salary premiums increasing as experience grows.
AI is not just a niche. It is a salary multiplier. A new analysis shows that professionals with AI skills are consistently earning more than those in traditional IT roles, with the salary gap widening as careers progress.
The findings suggest that employers are increasingly rewarding practical AI expertise over years of experience alone, reflecting the growing demand for professionals who can build, deploy and work effectively with AI technologies.
The salary gap grows with experience
The analysis found that AI professionals receive a salary premium at every stage of their careers. At the entry level, AI roles offer an average salary of around Rs 6 lakh per annum, compared with Rs 5 lakh for traditional IT positions, representing a 20% difference.
The gap becomes even more noticeable after a few years of experience. Professionals with three to five years in AI earn around Rs 12 lakh annually, compared with Rs 9 lakh in traditional IT, a 33% premium. Between five and ten years of experience, AI salaries average about Rs 22 lakh, while comparable IT roles pay around Rs 17 lakh.
The biggest difference appears at senior levels. Professionals with more than ten years of experience earn an average of Rs 36 lakh in AI roles, compared with Rs 26 lakh in traditional IT, giving AI specialists a 38% salary advantage. Top AI professionals can earn as much as Rs 70 lakh annually.
GCCs are driving demand for AI talent
One of the biggest contributors to rising AI salaries is the rapid expansion of Global Capability Centres (GCCs), which are technology and business operation hubs established by multinational companies in India.
The report found that GCCs typically pay 12% to 20% more than IT services firms for similar roles. However, for AI and data specialists, that premium can rise to between 30% and 50%. Nearly two-thirds of new GCC job openings now seek skills in AI, data analytics or automation, with hiring strongest among professionals with four to ten years of experience.
Skills matter more than experience
The findings indicate that employers are increasingly hiring based on proven capability rather than tenure. Professionals who can work with AI models, manage data, evaluate AI outputs and build reliable AI workflows are becoming highly valuable across industries.
The ability to demonstrate measurable business outcomes, such as improving productivity, reducing costs or increasing efficiency, is also becoming an important differentiator in the job market.
AI is reshaping technology careers
The analysis, based on 950 technology job postings across Mumbai, Pune, Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, highlights a clear trend: AI expertise is becoming one of the most valuable skills in India's technology sector.
As businesses continue integrating AI into products and operations, professionals who invest in practical AI capabilities are likely to remain in strong demand while commanding higher salaries than many traditional IT roles.
