AI is squeezing entry-level workers hardest, Stanford finds
Are young workers bearing the brunt of AI disruption? Stanford's latest analysis points to a growing employment gap.
AI is not replacing everyone, but it is reshaping the first rung on the career ladder. A new Stanford analysis suggests young workers in occupations most exposed to AI are facing a sharper employment squeeze than their peers in less-exposed roles.
The gap is showing up mainly in hiring rather than a broad wave of layoffs, raising questions about how early-career workers will gain the experience needed to move up.
Young workers are feeling the impact
In a report published on 12 August, Stanford’s Digital Economy Lab noted that employment for 22–25-year-olds in the most AI-exposed occupations is about 19% below where it would be if it had kept pace with similar young workers in less-exposed roles.
The researchers stress that this is a descriptive gap, not a definitive causal estimate, and that they do not see economy-wide job displacement. The analysis uses high-frequency payroll data from ADP to track hiring patterns across US firms.
The difference is sharpest in jobs where AI can automate tasks rather than simply assist workers. Jobs that rely heavily on codified knowledge, such as work based on standardised procedures and documented rules, show larger employment declines among younger workers.
Roles that depend more on tacit knowledge gained through experience, judgement and social context have been more stable, particularly for older workers.
The hiring bottleneck is the bigger issue
According to the Stanford team, reduced hiring of young workers appears to be the main channel behind the employment gap, rather than a rise in separations. Base pay has also remained comparatively stable.
This suggests companies may be automating some junior tasks while retaining experienced employees whose judgement and practical knowledge are harder for current AI systems to replicate.
What happens to the first step of a career?
The findings do not mean AI has closed off career opportunities for young workers. Instead, entry-level jobs may be changing fastest in fields where AI can automate routine knowledge work. That could make skills gained through real-world experience more valuable.
Problem-solving with messy inputs, working with clients, collaboration, and supervised practice can help workers develop the tacit knowledge that AI does not easily replicate. Employers may also need to rethink early-career roles so new hires can build experience while working alongside AI.
Educators and policymakers could do so by expanding apprenticeships and other forms of work-based learning. Stanford is tracking these changes through its AI Economic Indicators, including a Canaries Dashboard that refreshes the measures each month.
The bigger picture is still developing. There is no sign of an economy-wide AI jobs collapse, but the pressure is becoming clearer at the entry level.
