Amaravati is getting India's first Quantum and AI university
Amaravati will get India’s first dedicated Quantum and AI University, backed by Rs 730.70 crore for education and deep-tech research.
Amaravati is betting on the technologies that could shape the next generation of computing. The Andhra Pradesh government has approved India’s first dedicated Quantum and Artificial Intelligence University campus in Amaravati.
The project will be developed by the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), a Deemed-to-be University under the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
The university is designed to bring education, research and startup development around AI, quantum computing, semiconductors and other deep-tech fields under one roof.
A Rs 731-crore investment in deep tech
The proposed campus will be built on an 8.5-acre site in Amaravati, with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology providing Rs 730.70 crore through 100% Grant-in-Aid over five years.
The decision was taken at a Capital Region Development Authority meeting chaired by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu at the Secretariat. Students will not have to wait for the permanent campus to be completed.
Classes and skilling programmes are scheduled to begin in September 2026 at a temporary facility at Acharya Nagarjuna University in Guntur.
The university will offer undergraduate, postgraduate, PhD, diploma and other programmes covering areas such as quantum computing and security, AI and machine learning, data science, VLSI, chip design, semiconductor fabrication and high-performance computing.
Labs, research and startups will be part of it
The project goes beyond classrooms. A 1.25 lakh sq. ft. Quantum Research, Innovation and Incubation Block is planned with quantum photonics labs, cleanroom nano-fabrication facilities and data centres.
These facilities could give students and researchers access to infrastructure used for advanced work in quantum technology and semiconductor development. The block will also support startup incubation and technology transfer, helping researchers turn ideas developed in labs into commercial products and technologies.
The campus itself is planned as a solar-powered net-zero facility with accommodation for 500 residents.
Amaravati wants a place in India’s deep-tech race
The university aims to train 8,250 learners over five years, potentially creating a larger talent pool for some of India’s fastest-growing technology sectors. NIELIT is expected to collaborate with institutions including IIT Tirupati, IIIT Sri City, Andhra University and JNTU to strengthen the talent pipeline.
The project also aligns with major national initiatives including the National Quantum Mission, IndiaAI Mission and India Semiconductor Mission.
A university combining quantum research, AI, chip design and startup incubation could help create an ecosystem around technologies that India is increasingly trying to develop domestically.
If the plans stay on track, Amaravati could soon have a new identity alongside its role as Andhra Pradesh’s capital: a hub for India’s next generation of deep-tech talent.
