Amazon Brings AI Learning to Telangana Government Schools
Amazon and the Telangana School Education Department have partnered to bring structured AI literacy to government school students from Classes 6 to 9.
AI is moving from tech labs into classrooms. Amazon has partnered with the Telangana School Education Department to introduce artificial intelligence literacy in government schools across the state.
The initiative, detailed in a statement reported on 1 July 2026, is expected to benefit around one million students annually under the Amazon-supported rollout and marks a major step in bringing emerging technology education to public school classrooms in Telangana.
A structured AI curriculum for young learners
The programme will be implemented through Amazon Future Engineer, Amazon’s education-focused initiative. It will cover students from Classes 6 to 9, giving them early exposure to the basics of AI and how it is used in everyday life.
Students will undergo 25 hours of structured AI training every year. The lessons will include decision-making methods, computational thinking, and real-world applications of AI. In simple terms, computational thinking helps students break down problems, find patterns and create step-by-step solutions, which are useful skills both inside and outside the classroom.
The curriculum has been developed by the State Council of Educational Research and Training, with content and implementation support from Pi Jam Foundation, a nonprofit organisation. Students will access the learning material through CodeMitra, the foundation’s EdTech platform.
Teachers and infrastructure at the centre
For the programme to work at scale, teacher preparation is a key focus. The Telangana government has trained over 28,000 teachers to deliver the AI curriculum in schools. This is important because AI education cannot be limited to devices or software alone.
Teachers need to help students understand concepts, ask questions and connect technology with real-life situations. Classroom infrastructure is also being strengthened to support interactive learning.
As part of the initiative, Amazon will provide more than 2,000 refurbished laptops to 93 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas and 152 Core Urban Region Economy schools across Telangana. This support is aimed at improving digital access, especially for students who may not have regular exposure to computers at home.
Why the initiative matters
Telangana is now among the early states in India to introduce AI learning in government schools on such a large scale. The move can help reduce the digital divide by giving students from underserved backgrounds an opportunity to understand technologies that are shaping future careers.
The initiative includes employee-led mentoring, career counselling and exposure to emerging technology careers. This can help students see AI not just as a subject, but as a tool that can be applied to solve practical problems. As of now, Amazon aims to reach 4 million government school students by 2030 through AI education.
Moreover, the tech firm claims its Future Engineer programme, launched in India in 2021, has already reached more than 5.5 million students in 40,000 government schools across 14 states.
A step towards future-ready education
The Telangana initiative reflects a growing shift in school education, where digital skills are becoming as important as traditional subjects. By introducing AI concepts early, the programme can help students become informed users and creators of technology. If implemented effectively, it could become a model for bringing future-ready learning to government schools across India.
