Animate Your Facebook Profile Picture With Meta AI
New creative tools for Profiles, Stories, Memories, and text posts began rolling out on 10 February 2026.
Facebook users can now turn a simple display photo into a short animation with Meta AI. Announced on 10 February 2026, the feature arrives alongside fresh creative options for Stories, Memories, and text posts. Meta says the aim is to make everyday sharing more expressive while keeping the experience quick and easy inside the app.
What the new AI tools enable
The headline update lets you animate a still profile picture in seconds. According to the company, users can choose from preset styles such as natural, party hat, confetti, wave, and heart. More templates are expected over the year to reflect seasonal moments and celebrations. The animated picture plays as a short loop on your profile and can also be shared to your Feed.
For best results, Meta recommends using a photo where one person is looking directly at the camera, the face is clearly visible, and hands or objects do not block key features. You can animate a new image from your gallery or select an existing photo already uploaded to Facebook.
Stories, Memories, and text posts get creative options
Beyond profile pictures, Facebook is rolling out Restyle for Stories and Memories. As per the company’s description, Restyle allows people to transform a photo’s look using either preset styles or a brief text prompt. Categories such as Styles, Moods, Lighting, Colours, and Backdrops help creators switch the tone of an image without leaving the app.
Text posts in Feed are also getting animated and still backdrops. While composing a post, users can tap the rainbow A icon to pick from a set of backgrounds, with seasonal designs slated to arrive later. Meta notes that this backdrop feature is being introduced gradually, so availability may vary by account and region at launch.
Availability and context
The new tools began rolling out on 10 February 2026. Meta has not detailed a full regional schedule, and the company’s language suggests a phased approach, particularly for animated text-post backgrounds. The update aligns with Meta’s broader push to build lightweight, mobile-first creation features that encourage people to start conversations with friends. The company, led by CEO Mark Zuckerberg, positions these additions as ways to help users personalise their presence on the platform.
How do I animate my Facebook profile picture with Meta AI
If the feature has reached your account, you can animate your profile image within the standard edit flow on the Facebook app. The basic steps are as follows.
- Update the Facebook app on your Android or iPhone to the latest version.
- Open your profile and tap your profile picture to edit it.
- Choose the option to animate your picture if it appears.
- Select a preset such as wave, confetti, party hat, heart, or natural.
- Preview the animation, then save it to your profile. You can also share it to your Feed.
If you do not see the option yet, check again after a few days. As with many product updates, Meta is rolling this out in phases. Backdrops for text posts are explicitly described as a gradual release.
What this means for creators and everyday users
For creators, subtle motion on a profile can stand out in crowded feeds and may help signal fresh activity. Restyle, meanwhile, offers a quick way to change an image’s mood or aesthetic without opening a separate editing app. For everyday users, the presets and guided categories lower the barrier to creating eye-catching visuals, from festival greetings to casual updates.
