ElevenLabs debuts AI music tool with commercial use rights
Eleven Music generates complete songs from text prompts
AI voice technology firm ElevenLabs has launched a generative music tool named Eleven Music, which enables users to create entire songs - including vocals and instrumentals—from simple text prompts. The company announced on 5 August that the tool is now available in beta and is positioned for commercial use, backed by licensed training data.
ElevenLabs stated that Eleven Music was developed using datasets obtained through partnerships with rights organisations such as Merlin Network and Kobalt Music Group, allowing for legally compliant generation of royalty-free music.
Text-to-music generation at scale
The platform supports various music genres, including pop, acoustic, EDM, lo-fi, and hip-hop. Users can input a prompt to generate music with adjustable parameters such as tempo, instruments, language, and lyrical themes. Songs can be produced with or without vocals, and lyrics are editable at the section level.
Each track is rendered in under two minutes and can be exported in standard audio formats compatible with editing suites. The output is cleared for use in films, video games, advertisements, podcasts, and social media-depending on the user’s subscription tier.
Legal safeguards and restrictions
To avoid copyright infringement, ElevenLabs prohibits prompts that use real artist names or copyrighted lyrics. Generated content is not based on unlicensed or scraped musical works, differentiating the tool from earlier AI music platforms facing litigation.
The service’s legal architecture is aimed at avoiding the challenges currently faced by companies like Suno and Udio, which have been criticised for training on copyrighted content without clear consent. ElevenLabs says it is committed to transparency and maintaining industry-standard rights compliance.
Rollout and access
Eleven Music is now accessible to registered users on the ElevenLabs platform, with free trials and subscription plans available. The company has indicated that more features-including vocal tuning and collaboration tools-will be released in future updates.
