Elon Musk’s xAI lays off 500 Grok trainers in major restructuring
Elon Musk’s xAI has laid off 500 employees training Grok, citing a strategic shift towards specialist AI tutors with domain expertise.
Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI has laid off around 500 employees working as data annotators, known internally as “general AI tutors”, who were tasked with training its chatbot Grok. The layoffs, confirmed through an internal email sent to workers, mark a significant restructuring of the company’s approach to building human data capabilities.
Layoffs affect data annotation team
According to reports, xAI informed the affected employees that their access to company systems would end immediately, though their salaries would continue until the end of their contracts or until 30 November. The laid-off workers were primarily involved in tasks such as labelling data and providing broad, generalist training to Grok, the generative AI assistant integrated with Musk’s social media platform X.
The company said it had conducted a thorough review of its human data operations before deciding to reduce its workforce. The email stated that xAI would be scaling back roles focused on “general AI tutoring” and instead move towards prioritising more specialised expertise.
Strategic pivot towards specialist tutors
In its internal communication, xAI explained that it intends to significantly expand its team of “specialist AI tutors”. Unlike general annotators, these roles require domain-specific knowledge to provide more focused training to Grok. Examples of fields where xAI is hiring include medicine, data science, video games, web design, and core STEM disciplines.
The company noted that it expects to increase the size of its specialist tutor team by nearly tenfold, signalling a major pivot in strategy. By concentrating on expertise-driven inputs, xAI aims to make Grok more effective across professional and technical domains.
Grok and xAI’s ambitions
xAI was founded in 2023 with the goal of developing advanced artificial intelligence systems to rival products from OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic. Its chatbot, Grok, is positioned as a conversational AI designed to integrate tightly with X, formerly Twitter, providing users with real-time responses and humour-infused interactions.
