Google makes Gemini AI Pro plan worth Rs.19,500 free for Indian students
Google is offering Indian students free access to its Gemini AI Pro plan, which includes the latest Gemini 1.5 Pro model, for a year.
Google has announced that Indian students can now access its Gemini AI Pro plan for free for one year. The subscription, which typically costs ₹19,500 annually, will be made available to eligible students through the Google for Education initiative.
The offer is open to school and college students who use official school accounts and have access to Google Workspace for Education. Gemini, formerly known as Bard, is Google’s generative AI chatbot that competes with tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot.
How students can avail the free Gemini AI Pro plan
To access the free Gemini AI Pro plan, students must log in using their institutional Google Workspace for Education accounts. Once logged in, they can visit gemini.google.com and start using the upgraded features.
The Pro plan includes access to Google’s most advanced AI model, Gemini 1.5 Pro, with a context window of up to 1 million tokens. This enables deeper and longer interactions, making it suitable for summarising large documents, coding help, academic research, and more.
Google noted that this offer is being rolled out globally but has gained particular traction in India due to the country’s large student population and increasing focus on AI-driven learning tools.
Key features of Gemini 1.5 Pro for students
With the Gemini AI Pro plan, students will be able to:
- Use Gemini 1.5 Pro across Google apps including Docs, Gmail, and Sheets
- Upload and interact with files such as PDFs, presentations, and code
- Get AI-powered assistance for writing, research, programming, and studying
- Access multimodal capabilities such as image understanding
According to Google, the integration of Gemini within the Workspace environment allows students to streamline their workflow by bringing generative AI tools directly into platforms they already use for schoolwork.
Part of Google's broader AI education strategy
This initiative is part of Google’s larger push to integrate generative AI into learning environments. The company had earlier introduced AI tools in Google Classroom and other education-focused platforms. By offering Gemini AI Pro at no cost to students, Google aims to ensure early exposure to advanced AI tools in academic settings.
While the free plan is currently limited to students with institutional Google accounts, there is no word yet on whether a similar initiative will be extended to educators or general users.
