Google Images turns 25 with AI image generation and a new look
Google Images turns 25 with a redesigned homepage and AI image generation, adding a personalised gallery and prompt-led creations right in Search.
Google Images is celebrating its 25th anniversary with one of its biggest updates yet. The company has introduced a redesigned homepage and is bringing AI image generation directly into Google Search, making it easier for users to both discover and create images without leaving the platform.
A new homepage focused on visual discovery
The redesigned Google Images homepage moves beyond the familiar grid of search results. Instead, signed-in users will see a personalised gallery that highlights content based on their interests and recent activity.
Saved images are now organised into easy-to-access tabs, allowing users to revisit collections and ongoing projects without repeating searches. The refreshed layout is designed to make Google Images feel more like a space for exploration and inspiration than a traditional search page.
AI can now create images inside Search
One of the biggest additions is AI image generation within AI Overviews. If users cannot find the image they need, they can simply describe it using a text prompt and generate a custom visual directly from the search results page.
The feature is powered by Google's Nano Banana image generation model and supports follow-up prompts, allowing users to refine or edit generated images without starting over. Google says the rollout will begin in English across regions where AI Mode image creation is already available.
A milestone in Google's visual search journey
Google also highlighted how Images have evolved over the past 25 years. Since launching in 2001, the platform has introduced several major features, including Similar Images, Search by Image, Google Lens, Multisearch and Circle to Search.
More recently, Google expanded Lens with AI-powered conversations and shopping features, while Circle to Search gained the ability to recognise multiple objects in a single image. The company has also introduced an Intelligent Search Box that supports multiple image uploads and more detailed visual queries.
Rolling out over the coming weeks
The new Google Images homepage will begin rolling out over the coming weeks on desktop in the US for users signed into their Google accounts. AI image generation within AI Overviews is also being released gradually in English across supported regions.
Together, these updates signal a shift in how people interact with Google Images. Rather than simply searching for existing pictures, users will increasingly be able to explore ideas, organise inspiration and generate custom visuals, all from within Google's search experience.
