How to get ChatGPT Go for free in India
OpenAI has made ChatGPT Go free for 12 months in India from 4 Nov 2025. Here’s what the Go tier includes, how it compares to other plans, and the exact steps to sign up and complete checkout with UPI or cards.
OpenAI has announced that Indian users can claim a full year of ChatGPT Go at no charge from 4 November 2025, as part of a limited‑time promotion aligned with the company’s first DevDay Exchange in Bengaluru.
The offer targets both new users and existing ChatGPT Go subscribers, and OpenAI did not specify when the sign‑up window will close. Sam Altman’s company positioned the move as an India‑first push to broaden access to its AI tools.
Under the promotion, anyone in India who signs up during the window will receive 12 months of ChatGPT Go for free.
Ordinarily, Go is priced at ₹399 per month and supports local payment methods including UPI—part of a localisation drive for India. OpenAI has said existing ChatGPT Go subscribers in India are eligible for the free year as well.
What is ChatGPT Go?
ChatGPT Go is OpenAI’s low‑cost tier that extends access to its most popular features beyond the Free plan.
It offers more usage of the flagship GPT‑5 model, more image generation, more file uploads and advanced data analysis, plus longer memory for more personalised conversations.
Nick Turley, OpenAI’s VP and head of ChatGPT, highlighted that Go has substantially raised usage limits compared with the Free tier.
ChatGPT Go vs other ChatGPT tiers
Free vs Go: Free offers limited access to GPT‑5, basic tools and lower limits. Go lifts those limits materially—covering messages, image creation and file uploads—and provides longer memory and more frequent access to advanced data analysis.
Go vs Plus: Plus sits above Go with higher limits, faster responses, voice with video/screensharing and access to deep research and multiple reasoning models. Go focusses on expanded everyday access at a lower cost.
Go vs Pro/Business: Pro and Business are designed for power users and teams, offering the highest access levels, larger context windows and additional controls that go beyond individual plans. Go does not include those enterprise‑grade features.
Step by step: How to get ChatGPT Go
1) Create or sign in to your ChatGPT account: Use the ChatGPT website or mobile app. Ensure your account country is set to India and your mobile number is verified for India.
2) Go to Plans/Upgrade: Open your profile menu and choose “Plans” or “Upgrade”. Select “ChatGPT Go”.
3) Look for the promotion: On the Go plan page, the checkout shows a “Free for 1 year” or equivalent label during the promotional period.
4) Choose a payment method: Even for a free year, you may be asked to add a valid method for renewal. India has supported cards and UPI apps such as PhonePe, Google Pay or Paytm.
5) Authorise and confirm: Complete authorisation as prompted. Some users cited in reports claimed they had to pay a ₹1 verification charge or faced initial activation hiccups on launch day; switching browser (for example, to Brave) has resolved it for some of them.
6) Check activation: In “Manage plan”, confirm that ChatGPT Go is active with billing set to ₹0 for the 12‑month period, after which standard pricing will be applied unless cancelled.
