IBM teams up with OpenAI to bring AI deeper into businesses

Enterprise AI is moving beyond experimentation. IBM and OpenAI have announced a strategic partnership aimed at helping organisations deploy AI more deeply across their operations.
Revealed on 13 August 2026, the collaboration combines OpenAI’s latest AI models with IBM’s consulting and enterprise transformation capabilities to help businesses move from AI pilots to production-scale deployments.
What the partnership includes
Under the agreement, IBM will integrate OpenAI technologies, including GPT-5.6, Codex and ChatGPT Work, into IBM Consulting Advantage, the company's AI-powered consulting platform.
The goal is to help organisations modernise applications, automate workflows and improve productivity across departments such as finance, procurement, human resources and customer operations. Rather than focusing only on AI experimentation, the partnership is designed to support real-world deployment across core business functions.
IBM launches a dedicated OpenAI practice
To support adoption, IBM is creating a dedicated OpenAI Practice within its consulting business. The company says it will train and certify thousands of consultants and engineers through the OpenAI Partner Network.
These teams will work directly with clients to identify opportunities, implement AI solutions and manage deployment challenges. IBM also plans to use forward-deployed teams, meaning specialists will work closely with customers on-site or within their operations rather than building solutions remotely.
The approach is intended to accelerate adoption in industries such as financial services, government, telecommunications and retail.
Security and governance take centre stage
One of the biggest challenges facing enterprise AI adoption is trust. Organisations want the benefits of AI, but they also need assurances around security, governance and compliance. IBM and OpenAI say security will be a major focus of the partnership.
The collaboration builds on IBM's participation in the OpenAI Daybreak Cyber Partner Program and will combine OpenAI's AI capabilities with IBM Autonomous Security, a multi-agent security platform designed to improve threat detection and response.
