IITM Pravartak, Sarvam AI partner for sovereign AI deployment
The collaboration seeks to deliver production-ready AI applications aligned with India’s data and governance needs, with a focus on multilingual models and local infrastructure.
AI startup Sarvam AI and IITM Pravartak Technologies Foundation have announced a new partnership that is part of a push towards building sovereign AI (artificial intelligence) in India.
The collaboration aims to design and deploy AI systems for government and industry that are rooted in Indian data, languages and infrastructure, highlighting a wider national effort to reduce reliance on external technology ecosystems.
The two organisations formalised their collaboration through a memorandum of understanding. In this case, the focus is on creating end-to-end AI applications that are ready for real-world use across sectors such as public administration, defence, financial services, and healthcare.
Sovereign AI refers to systems developed and operated within a country’s own technological and regulatory framework. It ensures that data control, security and decision-making remain domestic.
This has become increasingly relevant as AI systems handle sensitive information and play a larger role in governance and economic activity.
Sarvam AI has emerged as a key participant in India’s AI ecosystem by focusing on foundational models tailored for the country. Its work includes multilingual language models, as well as conversational AI and speech technologies that enable interaction through text and voice. These capabilities aim to address a long-standing gap in digital systems that have often struggled with India’s linguistic diversity.
Pratyush Kumar, Co-founder of Sarvam AI, said the company brings globally competitive AI models and products, while IITM Pravartak contributes institutional depth and a track record of working in areas of national importance.
IITM Pravartak, operating out of the IIT Madras Research Park, contributes a different but complementary capability. It specialises in AI solution engineering and systems integration, which involves combining various technologies into a cohesive and functional system. Its role is to take advanced AI models and translate them into deployable solutions that can function reliably in real-world settings such as government departments or large enterprises.
M. J. Shankar Raman, Chief Executive Officer of IITM Pravartak Technologies Foundation, said the partnership is aimed at accelerating indigenous AI capabilities. He noted that the collaboration combines IITM Pravartak’s algorithmic research with Sarvam AI’s secure, locally hosted infrastructure to deploy domain-specific models that are culturally contextualised.
AI sovereignty will happen, and India will achieve frugal AI, says IITM director Kamakoti
The collaboration is part of a broader shift in India’s approach to AI. Earlier phases of AI adoption relied heavily on global platforms and generic models. However, as use cases expand into governance, finance and public services, there is a growing need for systems that understand local contexts, comply with domestic regulations, and operate securely within national boundaries.
