How India’s IITs are putting AI at the centre of engineering
India’s IITs are making AI central to engineering education, with more than 50 AI-linked programmes spanning degrees, diplomas and courses.
Across India’s 23 Indian Institutes of Technology, AI is moving from specialist programmes into the core of engineering education. A recent review of offerings shows more than 50 AI-linked degree programmes, highlighting a major shift in how future engineers are being trained.
This shows the growing industry demand and the expanding role of data-driven methods across design, analysis and operations. AI is increasingly becoming a shared part of the engineering toolkit, alongside mathematics and computing.
AI takes a central role in engineering
The pipeline now stretches from full degrees to shorter, job-ready courses. IIT Ropar’s School of Artificial Intelligence & Data Engineering runs a dedicated B.Tech in Artificial Intelligence and Data Engineering, bringing AI-focused learning into the undergraduate curriculum from the beginning.
At IIT Mandi, data and AI coursework is embedded at the undergraduate level, giving students exposure to programming, statistics and machine learning as part of their main engineering education rather than as optional subjects.
IIT Delhi’s Yardi School of Artificial Intelligence has expanded postgraduate options with an M.Tech in Machine Intelligence and Data Science and an M.S. (Research) track. The curriculum combines mathematical and data foundations with areas such as deep learning, computer vision and natural language processing.
More ways to learn AI
IITs are also creating pathways for students and working professionals who want to build AI skills without following a traditional full-time route.
IIT Madras offers web-enabled postgraduate diploma and M.Tech options in AI and related fields, combining online learning with proctored examinations and substantial project work.
The institute has also offered beginner-friendly AI courses through SWAYAM Plus, covering areas such as AI in Accounting and AI and machine learning using Python. These courses provide learners with another route to build practical skills and earn recognised credits.
For professionals, IIT Bombay has introduced an 18-month Executive Post-Graduate Diploma in AI and Data Science. The programme combines academic learning with industry projects and periodic on-campus engagement.
AI spreads beyond computer science
The AI push is no longer limited to computer science departments. IITs are increasingly applying AI to areas such as manufacturing, healthcare and robotics. At the same time, programmes are beginning to address questions around responsible AI, model interpretability and the wider impact of automated systems.
This means students are not only learning how to build AI systems, but also how to understand their limitations and consider how they should be used in professional settings.
