CES 2026: Intel unveils Core Ultra Series 3 to handle AI workloads
Intel said Series 3 will power more than 200 laptop designs across price tiers, with an emphasis on power efficiency and app compatibility through the x86 ecosystem.
At CES in Las Vegas on 5 January 2026, Intel announced the Intel Core Ultra Series 3 processors, its first client platform manufactured on the new Intel 18A process.
Codenamed Panther Lake, the chips are positioned to push the next wave of AI PCs with gains in performance, graphics and battery life. Pre-orders begin on 6 January, and systems are slated to reach shelves globally on 27 January, according to the company.
What is new in Series 3?
Intel said Series 3 will power more than 200 laptop designs across price tiers, with an emphasis on power efficiency and app compatibility through the x86 ecosystem. The lineup introduces new X-class parts, led by Core Ultra X9 and X7, which integrate high-end Intel Arc graphics alongside upgraded CPU clusters and a faster on-chip NPU for on-device AI.
Top-end configurations feature up to 16 CPU cores, 12 Xe GPU cores and 50 NPU TOPS. Intel’s internal data claims up to 60 percent higher multithread performance compared to the prior generation, up to 77 percent faster gaming and as much as 27 hours of battery life in selected workloads. These X-series parts target creators, gamers and heavy multitaskers who want desktop-class capability in thin-and-light form factors.
Industry coverage indicated the platform can scale to as much as 180 TOPS of total AI compute when CPU, GPU and NPU are combined, and references a new Arc B390 integrated GPU. For shoppers, model names that include an H suffix will generally signal higher performance headroom in thicker designs, along with broader I/O such as Thunderbolt 5, as reported by reviewers tracking the launch.
Beyond laptops, edge ambitions
Alongside consumer notebooks, Intel is extending Series 3 into embedded and industrial deployments. The company said selected parts are tested for extended temperature ranges and deterministic performance, targeting use cases ranging from robotics and smart cities to healthcare and automation.
Intel’s figures cite up to 1.9 times higher large language model throughput, up to 2.3 times better performance per watt per rupee on end-to-end video analytics and up to 4.5 times higher throughput on vision language action models, compared to prior-generation platforms and alternative setups evaluated in its labs.
Availability and what to watch
Intel said the first wave of Core Ultra Series 3 laptops will go up for pre-order on 6 January, followed by broad retail availability from 27 January. Additional designs are expected through the first half of 2026.
