Linda Yaccarino is stepping down as CEO of X (formerly Twitter) after serving for two years at the company.
A former NBCUniversal advertising executive, Yaccarino was appointed as the CEO of the social media platform in June 2023, less than a year after Elon Musk acquired the platform in a $44 billion deal.
“After two incredible years, I’ve decided to step down as CEO of X. When Elon Musk and I first spoke of his vision for X, I knew it would be the opportunity of a lifetime to carry out the extraordinary mission of this company. I’m immensely grateful to him for entrusting me with the responsibility of protecting free speech, turning the company around, and transforming X into the Everything App,” she said in a post on X.
She further noted her key achievements during her tenure, including restoring advertiser confidence, enhancing user safety, especially for children, along with rolling out features such as Community Notes and the soon-to-launch X Money.
“Now, the best is yet to come as X enters a new chapter with xAI. X is truly a digital town square for all voices and the world’s most powerful culture signal. We couldn’t have achieved that without the support of our users, business partners, and the most innovative team in the world," she said
"I’ll be cheering you all on as you continue to change the world. As always, I’ll see you on X,” she added.
The CEO’s resignation follows closely on the heels of some controversial incidents on X when the Grok chatbot delivered antisemitic content to users. The departure also comes months after Musk transferred ownership of his social media platform to xAI. This integration, while deepening ties between the two businesses, left uncertainty about Yaccarino’s future position.
Responding to Yaccarino’s announcement, Musk said, “Thank you for your contributions.”
