Luma AI unveils Ray3 Modify to bring keyframe and character controls to AI video
New tools in Dream Machine aim to preserve human performance while enabling scene, wardrobe and lighting changes, the company said.
Luma AI has introduced Ray3 Modify, a set of video-to-video controls inside its Dream Machine platform that promise tighter creative control while preserving the nuances of human performance. Announced on 18 December 2025, the update adds start and end keyframes and character reference tools to guide scene evolution without breaking motion, timing or emotion in the original footage, according to the company.
What the new release adds
The company said Ray3 Modify strengthens three pillars. First, Modify Video has been reworked to better maintain physical logic and narrative coherence when transforming shots, for instance swapping wardrobes or relighting a scene.
Second, Modify with Keyframes lets creators set a Start Frame and an End Frame so the AI can interpolate transitions and maintain spatial continuity across complex camera moves. Third, Character Reference can lock likeness, costume and identity across a clip, helping actor-led projects keep continuity while changing environments or styling.
In a statement accompanying the launch, Amit Jain, co-founder and CEO of Luma AI, said Ray3 Modify “blends the real world with the expressivity of AI while giving full control to creatives,” allowing teams to capture performances and then reposition them in any setting without redoing a physical shoot.
How does Ray3 Modify preserve performance
Luma positions Ray3 Modify as a hybrid-AI workflow in which the human-led input, either an actor’s performance or camera move, provides the direction. The model conditions generation on that input, which the company says reduces guesswork and improves adherence to the original motion, framing and emotional delivery. This is meant to address a long-standing limitation in AI video, namely the difficulty of retaining timing and intent through heavy scene edits.
Use cases the company is highlighting
- Wardrobe swap, change costumes while keeping the same takes and blocking intact.
- Environment swap, move a performance into a new world or location while respecting original camera dynamics.
- Relighting, adjust mood and tone without reshooting.
- Virtual product placement, insert brand assets in post while preserving continuity.
- Magic transitions with start–end keyframes, direct reveals or morphs between states.
- Virtual crowds and background changes that maintain the primary performance.
Availability and access
Ray3 Modify is available now within Dream Machine, Luma’s image and video creation platform. The company has positioned the tools for production workflows across film, advertising and post-production.
Ray3 itself is accessible to all paid accounts on the service, with a Draft Mode that brings faster, lower-cost previews for free accounts. Users can upgrade for full Ray3 fidelity, including HDR and pro export options, as per the company’s support documentation.
