Meta launches Muse Image to take on OpenAI and Google AI
Meta has launched Muse Image, its first in-house AI image generation model, bringing text-to-image creation and editing to Meta AI, Instagram and WhatsApp.
Meta is bringing AI image generation closer to where people already create and share content.
The company has unveiled Muse Image, its first in-house AI model for generating and editing images. Announced on 7 July 2026, the model will power image creation inside Meta AI and gradually roll out across platforms, including WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Messenger.
By developing its own image generation technology, Meta is strengthening its AI ecosystem while reducing its reliance on external providers.
Where can you use Muse Image?
Muse Image is developed by Meta Superintelligence Labs and is being introduced across multiple Meta products. Users can access the feature through the Meta AI app and web experience, as well as in direct chats on WhatsApp.
It is also being integrated into Instagram Stories, with support for Facebook and Messenger expected in future updates. Meta also plans to use Muse Image in Advantage+, its AI-powered advertising platform, helping businesses generate marketing creatives more efficiently.
Features designed for everyday creators
Muse Image goes beyond basic text-to-image generation. You can create images from written prompts and make detailed edits by placing annotations directly on the image. The model also introduces features that blend AI with social media experiences.
For example, users can reference public Instagram accounts to incorporate existing photos into creative workflows. Another feature allows people to redesign rooms using AI-generated suggestions based on actual products available online or through Facebook Marketplace.
Alongside Muse Image, Meta has also previewed Muse Video, an upcoming AI model that will generate short videos from prompts.
How it compares with competitors
Now, Meta says Muse Image performs competitively against leading AI image generation models. According to the company, the model generally outperforms Google's Nano Banana 2 in human preference evaluations for image creation and editing.
However, Meta acknowledges that OpenAI's latest image generation system still leads in overall performance.
Why Meta built its own image model
Until now, Meta AI has relied partly on external image generation technology. Launching Muse Image gives Meta greater control over its AI ecosystem, allowing the company to integrate image generation more deeply into Instagram, WhatsApp and its advertising products.
It also enables Meta to deliver a more consistent experience for creators, businesses and everyday users across its platforms.

What's next for Muse Image?
Meta plans to expand Muse Image to additional countries while introducing more than 30 AI-powered creative effects for Instagram. The company also intends to strengthen AI tools for advertisers through deeper integration with Advantage+.
As competition from Google and OpenAI continues to grow, Muse Image represents Meta's latest effort to build a fully integrated AI ecosystem. By combining image generation with its massive social media platforms, Meta is aiming to make AI creativity a seamless part of how people communicate, create content and shop online.
