ChatGPT gets in-chat app directory, invites developer submissions
Apps SDK remains in beta, app reviews begin with listings discoverable inside ChatGPT
OpenAI has opened up submissions for third-party apps inside ChatGPT, with an in-chat app directory that lets users browse featured listings or search for published apps. The company announced the rollout on 17 December 2025, adding that reviews will start immediately for publication in ChatGPT.
Developers can now build chat-native experiences with the Apps SDK, then submit their apps for review and publication.
Apps can be invoked by '@ mentioning' them in a conversation or by selecting them from the tools menu. The app directory is accessible from within ChatGPT, and developers will be able to use deep links to take users directly to an app’s listing page.
The Apps SDK is built on the Model Context Protocol and is designed to let apps bring external data and actions into ChatGPT.
OpenAI has released best-practice guidance, open-source example apps, an open-sourced UI library for chat-first interfaces, and a step-by-step quickstart to help teams ship high-quality experiences.
How the app review and publication works
According to the company, submissions are handled through the OpenAI Developer Platform. Developers provide MCP connectivity details, testing instructions, directory metadata, and country availability.
Approved apps will be eligible for listing in the directory, with the first set of approved apps rolling out gradually in the new year.
How can developers submit apps to ChatGPT?
- Enable Developer Mode in ChatGPT to build and test your app experience privately.
- Build your app with the Apps SDK, following the design guidelines and examples, and ensure it aligns with OpenAI’s usage policies.
- Sign in to the OpenAI platform with a verified developer account and open the app submission page.
- Complete the submission with required details, then track status via your platform account. You will receive an email confirmation with a Case ID.
- Respond to any clarifications during review. If approved, publish the app so it appears in the directory.
Monetisation, safety and privacy
In this early phase, developers can link out from their ChatGPT apps to their own websites or native apps to complete transactions for physical goods. OpenAI said it is exploring additional monetisation options over time, including digital goods.
As per the app submission guidelines, developers must include clear privacy policies, request only the minimum user information needed, and ensure their apps are appropriate for all audiences and compliant with third-party terms.
When users connect a new app, ChatGPT will disclose what data types may be shared and present the app’s privacy policy. Users can disconnect an app at any time to revoke access.
The move formalises a platform play around ChatGPT, creating a new distribution channel for developers who want to meet users where they already converse.
