ChatGPT disables tool that made private chats publicly searchable
OpenAI has disabled a ChatGPT feature that let users share chats publicly and make them discoverable via Google, after reports of private conversations appearing in search results.
OpenAI has removed a feature from ChatGPT that allowed users to make conversations publicly searchable, following widespread concern over personal chats showing up in Google search results.
The company acted swiftly after reports confirmed that private exchanges were unintentionally becoming accessible online.
The tool enabled users to create shareable links for their conversations. By default, these links were private, but users could check a box labeled “Make this chat discoverable” to allow indexing by search engines.
Although the setting was opt-in, many users appeared unaware that enabling it meant their conversations could be found publicly.
User conversations exposed through search queries
Toward the end of July 2025, users and researchers found that using the search operator site:chatgpt.com/share on Google pulled up thousands of public ChatGPT links.
An investigation by Fast Company found over 4,500 indexed chats—some containing names, personal stories, and job details.
Outlets like Cybernews and The Verge documented several such cases, including chats about mental health, professional struggles, and sensitive life experiences—raising concerns about accidental data exposure.
Company statement and feature removal
On 31 July 2025, OpenAI’s Chief Information Security Officer, Dane Stuckey, announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the discoverability setting would be removed.
“We just removed a feature from @ChatGPTapp that allowed users to make their conversations discoverable by search engines… Ultimately we think this feature introduced too many opportunities for folks to accidentally share things they didn’t intend to,” he posted.
By August 1, the setting had been removed across all accounts. OpenAI also initiated efforts to coordinate with search engines to deindex previously listed chat links and purge cached pages.
Privacy risks remain despite deletion
According to OpenAI’s support pages, deleting a conversation from ChatGPT’s history does not automatically revoke the shared link. Unless users disable or delete those links manually, they may still be accessible. Search engines may also continue to show cached copies until reindexed.
While OpenAI hasn’t confirmed whether the discoverability option will return, it has signalled that future features will come with clearer consent mechanisms and better visibility settings.
