OpenAI Codex weekly active users in India grow 27X since start of year
A strong builder culture in India is driving massive adoption of AI tools with major enterprises and startups integrating these advanced workflows into their operations.
The adoption of OpenAI’s coding and software engineering agent Codex is rising fast, with the number of weekly active users of the platform in the country grown 27X since the start of 2026.
By late April 2026, daily interactions with the system had increased by more than 20x, said a release by OpenAI.
This rapid expansion is an indicator that India is not just a consumer of technology but is rapidly becoming a leading global hub for AI engagement and execution.
India now ranks among the top five countries globally for the adoption of Codex, which is an AI model originally designed to translate natural language into computer code.
However, the data suggests that its application is now far more diverse than simple software development.
A significant shift is occurring in how the tool is used. More than a quarter of all requests in India are now for non-coding tasks. Professionals across various sectors are using the technology to synthesise complex information, draft formal documents, and automate their daily research.
This indicates that the tool is evolving into a general purpose assistant that helps users organise their workflows and communication more efficiently.
Thomas Jeng, Head of Startups for the Asia-Pacific region at OpenAI, said that the country’s strong builder culture is a primary driver of this momentum.
“What’s exciting about India is that adoption is not just happening among software engineers. We’re seeing founders, operators, researchers, students, and business teams increasingly use Codex to turn ideas into working outcomes faster,” Jeng noted.
This trend is not a sudden development but a continuation of high activity levels seen earlier in the year. In February, research found that the use of the platform for coding in India was already three times the global average.
The expansion is further supported by a growing ecosystem of major enterprises. Large scale organisations such as Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys have entered into collaborations to integrate these AI capabilities into their engineering and enterprise workflows. Similarly, the fintech company Razorpay has also embraced the technology to enhance its operations.
