OpenAI rolls out GPT-5, eyes India as potential largest market
The latest AI model brings major improvements in reasoning and performance across various tasks such as writing, coding, and healthcare applications.
OpenAI has officially launched the much-awaited GPT-5, its most advanced large language model (LLM) to date.
The AI firm on Thursday announced that it is making the model available to all users, including those on the free tier of ChatGPT.
The latest AI model brings major improvements in reasoning and performance across various tasks such as writing, coding, and healthcare applications. It also unites and surpasses OpenAI’s previous breakthroughs in frontier AI, spanning 4o, OpenAI o-series reasoning, agents, and advanced math capabilities.
According to multiple media reports, CEO Sam Altman noted that India is OpenAI’s second-largest market after the US, and could potentially become its biggest. He added that OpenAI is prioritising bringing its products to India, by collaborating with local partners to optimise AI for the country’s needs and make it more affordable.
He further stated GPT-5’s capabilities are similar to having a team of PhD-level experts on hand at any time.
“Thirty two months ago, we launched ChatGPT. Since then, it has become a default way people use AI. GPT5 is a major upgrade over GPT4 and a significant step along our path to AGI. It can write an entire computer programme from scratch. It can help you plan a party, help you understand your healthcare, and provide information on topics you like,” said Altman during the briefing call.
“This is an incredible superpower on demand, that would have been unimaginable, at any previous time in history. You can access an entire team of PhD level experts in your pocket, helping you with whatever you want to do,” he added.
One of the key updates in GPT-5 is its reduced hallucination rate, meaning the model is less likely to generate inaccurate or fabricated responses. The company added it conducted over 5,000 hours of safety testing before deployment.
The new model will be rolling out to Free, Plus, Pro, and Team users starting Thursday. Notably, this is the first time free users will have access to a reasoning model. If usage limits are reached, they will be shifted to GPT-5 Mini.
Currently, over 5 million paid users rely on ChatGPT business products, it said in a statement.
As for developers, OpenAI is offering three versions of the model—GPT-5, GPT-5 Mini, and GPT-5 Nano, through its API, built for different levels of performance and cost.
Alongside the launch of GPT-5, OpenAI has also introduced new personalisation features to ChatGPT.
Users will be able to customise the color theme of their chat interface, adding a personal touch to their interactions. The company also rolled out a research preview of personalities, which includes customised versions of ChatGPT with varied conversational styles.
Additionally, it added that users will also be able to connect the AI chatbot to external services like Gmail and Google Calendar to receive more contextual responses.
